The architectural expression of ‘Fragments in Time’ is the form which reflects decisions made based on the way a relatively large house can be inserted into a site with relative complexity. The result is a grand house that does not dominate its setting or unduly impact the character of the area. The scheme is an early version of what we regard as a low-carbon house. With a Ground Sourced Heat Pump using boreholes, the building was an early adopter of technology that is still seen as vanguard – the client had to work hard to balance the system which required an acuity not available from the market i.e. people knew how to install the kit, but its operation was less well known. Moreover, the client’s use of local trades, material supplies and production and fabrication e.g. the kitchen was made in Lewes, is part of the project’s wider consideration of sustainability and the reduction of carbon in construction and in-use.
